A+ Computer Courses
Computer Base Course
This is a self-paced, computer based program that offers a variety of classes at different grade levels for credit in Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Classes will be assigned by your TABE scores and high school graduation requirements. Once completing a class, credit will be issued accordingly. There are three parts to every lesson: Study, Practice Test and Mastery Test.

Language Arts

Essay – Language Arts
Requires essays on a “message received” from movies or stories; minimum of two reports, double spacing, 12 font, Times New Roman; 600-700words=(1/4 credit)
Grammar A and B
This class is designed to be the second, intermediate-level, course of a two-part English grammar series. It teaches principles to a solid understanding of English grammar. These principles include parts of speech, sentences, structure, punctuation, writing style, etc.

Literature
This course should help the student get a good overview of literature. It does this by using short stories and poetry to illustrate different genres, elements, styles, themes, etc. of literature written in diverse times and places. Emphasis is placed on the relationship of the student to the literature. Most assignments are interpretive in nature, asking the student to use his experience to form an opinion on what he’s read and explain it in literature of his own making.

Reading (Book Club)
This class is a self-paced reading course; it is designed to improve the students reading level by reading out loud to one another. This class helps the individual reading comprehension and skill level. It helps develop the minds ability to see the word and its pronunciation. It helps build confidence in the reader’s ability to read in front of people as well as builds his self-confidence in his vocabulary and public appearance. The “Book Club” shows a movie once a month on a topic that pertains to the material that they are reading. The class gives the student freedom to choose the book of his choice to maintain interest. Below is a list of books that are available amongst many other favorites. Credit is given towards literature, grammar, and language arts.

Be a Better Reader Work Books
This course is a beginning reading class that is designed to coincide with literature classes. The course teaches students to become comfortable with reading, the use of context clues, comprehension, study skills and understanding word meaning. The course takes a holistic approach to reading; it gears the curriculum towards wholesome interests the students have and cultivating those interests. The course also gives lessons on grammar, social studies, math, science and literature.
Completion of one work book=(1/4 credit)
Reading Levels A, B, C, D, E, F and G from fourth grade up to twelfth grade reading levels.
Anthology Books
This course is designed to coincide with literature classes. The Anthology series has a threefold purpose: to enhance students’ appreciation of literature, to help students master certain reading skills, and to improves students’ speaking and writing skills. The selections are arranged thematically and provide an appealing range of contemporary and classical literature. Each of the three anthology books, have been chosen with two purposes in mind: (1) to offer students high-interest, challenging selections from contemporary literature; and (2) to acquaint the reader with certain accepted classics in the literary tradition. This balance of contemporary and classical literature is presented in thematic units that invite the student to evaluate and compare. The course gears the curriculum towards wholesome interests the students have and cultivating those interests. The course also gives lessons on grammar, social studies, math, science, literature, fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that are related to a theme relevant to the reader.
American=(1 ½ credits), World=(1 ½ credits), and Cornerstone=(1 ¼ credits)
Spelling
This course is designed to improve spelling and word understanding. This course utilizes a wide variety or words to include nouns, pro-nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and verbs. The students utilize a dictionary to look up word meanings. They also use the words in sentences to become comfortable with them. The words all also used in a series of activities geared towards learning syllables and word break down. These activities include Power Point guess games, Hangman, and word searches.

Cursive Hand Writing
This course is designed to help students improve on their hand writing by learning cursive. This course includes a detailed instruction manual on how to properly write in cursive and teaches how to write various words in cursive using repetition and practice. Each student will complete an essay that is hand written in cursive. This course is worth a ¼ credit in language after completion of a 50 word test and written essay.
Mathematics
(3.00 Credits)
Basic Math
Basic Math for Adults is a 17 chapter program to help review and polish basic math skills. The student who successfully completes the entire program, should be ready for pre–algebra or algebra. The program lends itself either to individualized work or to group instruction. Beginning chapters include very basic reviews in working with whole numbers and basic operations, and moves through chapters on integers, basic geometry, consumer math, and statistics and proportions.

Algebra
BMA Algebra is a beginning algebra program designed for learners of all ages. It is designed to be used independently, but also lends itself to full classroom instruction. It is very important that the students watch the entire Power point® presentation before starting the homework assignment. There are practice problems given throughout the Power point® presentation. The student needs to do all of these practice problems as part of the presentation. Students who shortcut this often find themselves lost or confused when it comes to doing the homework assignment. Speaking of the homework assignment, it is also important that the student does each problem on the assignment. Tutoring services are provided if the student needs to ask for help when he/she does not understand a concept.

Personal Finance
This course helps provide the foundation for studying and using personal financial planning techniques. It will take an average of six months to complete. During the coursework the student will learn more on annual interest, future and single value of a single deposit, planning for a career, how to properly fill out a resume, and much more. Most assignments will be over the material that is read each week and how they will use this in their everyday lives.

Consumer Math
Consumer Math for Adults is a 10 chapter program to help review and polish Consumer math skills. The program lends itself either to individualized work or to group instruction. Beginning chapters include very basic reviews in working with hourly pay and time cards, and moves through chapters on income tax, salary and commission, checking accounts and loans.

Geometry I and II
These classes are designed to be the first two sections that teach geometry by the Euclidian method. This includes subjects helpful to understanding, but not normally associated with geometry (methods of reasoning, Venn diagrams, et al). Most of the program, however, deals with shapes, lines, measurements, and planes etc. in a 2-dimensional context, and their application.

Introduction to Science
This is instructional or a self-paced science course, based on the “Holt Science Spectrum,” 2001, presented by the” San Juan County Jail Education Center.” It is an introduction to science course that teaches the basic knowledge of beginning science, preparing the student for future science classes. The “Introduction to Science Course” is offered as part of the curriculum for both “Earth Science” and the “Physical Science” courses.
Completion of Introduction to Science = (1/4 credit)
Earth Science
This is instructional or a self-paced science course, based on the “Holt Science Spectrum,” 2001 edition and Heath Earth Science, 1997 edition, presented by the” San Juan County Jail Education Center.” It begins with an Introduction to science section and then moves into the Earth Science lessons in units 1 thru 5.
Completion of Introduction to Science =(1/4 credit), and Units 1 – 5 Earth Science = (1 ¼ credit)
Physical Science
This is instructional or a self-paced science course, based on the “Holt Science Spectrum,” 2001 edition, presented by the San Juan County Jail Education Center. It teaches basic physical science skills. It begins with the basic lessons in units 1 thru 12. The units consist of the following topics, Unit 1, Physical Science, Concepts & Tools, Unit 2, Mass, Volume, & Density, Unit 3, Rate, Time, & Density, Unit 4 Gravity, Unit 5, Forces, and Newton’s Laws of Motion, Unit 6, Relativity, Unit 7, Work & Power, Unit 8 Simple Machines, Unit 9, Mechanical Energy, Unit 10, Thermal Energy, Unit 11 Waves & Sound, Unit 12, The Electromagnetic Spectrum, Light, & Color. The course has been divided into 4 parts, each worth a ¼ credit. The course consists of 36 assignments and 13 exams.

The Arts

Crochet
The crochet class is not only an educational class. It’s also a way to give back to the community. This class helps with hand motor functions and eye and hand coordination. These skills may apply in future employment. The crochet class is a structured class. There is a set time and day for each class. There is a designated area for the class. The course is broken into three individual levels. These are beginning, intermediate, and advanced. Anything that belongs to S.J.E.C. will be signed in and signed out. All finished projects that are made with S.J.E.C. material are donated. Students sign a waiver for pictures to be taken. Students build a personal portfolio and give him a feeling of accomplishment. This class benefits the individual and the community. In order to receive credit you must fulfill the course requirements for each class.

ART
This art class is designed for the benefit of any student that is looking for a way to openly express their thoughts and ideas through the transfer of appropriate images to paper. The variety of subjects taught in this class includes portraits, landscaping, wildlife, still life, abstract, cartooning, cultural arts, and even brief historical reviews on famous artists and their techniques. The subjects in this class have been formatted into individual curriculums that explain the comprised lessons. Each curriculum, comprised of twelve boxes with lessons in each box, provides one half credits for every six boxes that are presented and completed.

Office 2007-Elective
This is a self-paced course using the Benchmark Microsoft Office 2007 work book by Rutkosky and Rutkosky. The Benchmark Microsoft Office 2007 is designed for students who want to learn how to use the new version of Microsoft’s popular suite to enhance their productivity for educational, workplace, and home use. Throughout the text, students are expected to develop and execute strategies for solving information processing and management problems using Word 2007; for solving numeric and Mathematical problems using Excel 2007; for organizing querying, and retrieving data using Access 2007; and for writing, creating, and producing presentations using Power Point 2007. Each section (Word, Access, Excel, and Power point) is divided into units; Unit 1 and Unit 2. After successfully completing a course using this textbook, students will be able to:
Analyze, synthesize, and evaluate school, work, or home information-processing tasks and use application software to meet those needs efficiently and effectively
Read about and learn for future use once released from prison how to access the Internet and use the browse, search, and hyperlink capabilities of Web browsers
